Mom and I have spent much of the holiday break moving into our new house. I'm not sure what to think of the place yet, but I'm awfully glad there's a giant back yard for me to run around in! I don't even have to go out on a leash anymore!
I've spent much of the time lounging on Mom's bed. I lead a pretty great life.

On Thursday, I lost my buddy Cracker. She was hit by a car about a month ago and was never able to recover. I've only known her for 3 years (since I'm 3 and 1/2), but she has been part of my mom's family for 16 years. She was a wonderful friend. Charlotte and I are really going to miss her. I think my grandmother is going to miss her the most.

From a Cat's Diary

Day 983 of my captivity. My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre
little dangling objects.

They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed
hash or some sort of dry nuggets. Although I make my contempt for the
rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to
keep up my strength.

The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape. In an
attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on the carpet.

Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their
feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it
clearly demonstrates what I am capable of. However, they merely made
condescending comments about what a 'good little hunter' I am.
Bastards.

There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was
placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However,
I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my
confinement was due to the power of ‘allergies'. I must learn what
this means and how to use it to my advantage.

Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my
tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try
this again tomorrow -- but at the top of the stairs.

I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches.
The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released - and
seems to be more than willing to return. He is obviously retarded.

The bird has got to be an informant. I observe him communicating with
the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move. My
captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so
he is safe. For now... Will keep you posted.

Kyle Schwab of Smashface Rescue rescues and trains abused and neglected Mastiffs, Bulldogs, and Pit Bulls. He just took in three dogs who have suffered severe cases of abuse and neglect.

From Kyle:

Sage: Neapolitan Mastiff, 6-8 years old
Sage is emaciated, has the onset of cataracts, and is hard of hearing. She is one of the sweetest dogs to enter the program in 17 years! Sage was shot four times, once in each leg. One bullet struck her forearm, one ripped off her pad on the opposite front leg, one shot to the rear thigh, and the last shot blew off one of her rear toes. She is making a slow and steady recovery at my facility. Sage was shot when an LAPD officer was too lazy to wait for Animal Control to corral her. The other dog with her was shot and killed. When I tried to obtain the police report, I was threatened with being arrested if I did not leave the station.

Rose: Dogue De Bordeaux 12-14 months old.
This girl has one of the most severe cases of Demodectic Mange I have ever seen. The fact that her owners neglected her for such a long period of time, and for it to get to this point, she must have sat in this condition for the last eight to ten months with no treatment; because of this she has a secondary bacterial infection in her lympathic system, in two of her mammary glands, and a goiter growing in her neck. These are all symptoms of a compromised immune system. Since these pictures she's had her tear duct gland rupture and is unable to see out of her left eye. As if all this wasn't bad enough, she is fighting off a nasty case of pneumonia. Rose will also need upper and lower eyelid surgery. In addition she has a severe yeast infection in her ears and on her paws. All this can be attributed to her previous owners lack of care.

Pinky: Red Nose Pitbull.
Pinky is also suffering from a severe case of demodetic mange and sunburn. She is at my facility undergoing treatment and recovering nicely, but being a red nose Pit, may linger in the program for an indefinite period of time.
I've exhausted all my financial resources, including my savings, so I'm asking the public for help. These girls are just midway through their rehabilitation and healing process.

I have fleas. Yes, you heard me. Fleas. No wonder I couldn't stop scratching and biting. Charlotte has them too. I'm convinced Charlotte gave them to me because I've never had fleas before in my life. Either they don't have fleas around my mom's apartment in Richmond or my mom just takes extra good care of me. Hmph. Fleas are gross!

My day just got a lot worse. I think I'm allergic to summer. I'm not sure if it's the grass or the bugs, but I can't stop scratching! I've been on Prednisone and Benedryl for a month and they're not working. After I got out of the bath, I went on a scratching streak. My mom couldn't figure out what else to do, so she put this awful cone on my head. I hate it!

I've always fancied myself as a curious creature. I'm kind of like a cat. See the pond pictured above? It's in my grandparent's backyard. For quite some time, I've wondered what it would be like to swim in it. It's full of fish and pretty plants. It even has a frog! Today, my curiosity got the best of me. When my grandfather took me out for a walk, I decided to take a swim. Needless to say, my mom was not pleased. That swim caused me to have my SECOND BATH OF THE HOLIDAY WEEKEND. Oh well, it was worth it!

Susie, the pit bull-German sheperd mix pictured above, is sitting with lawmakers in the North Carolina General Assembly who were voting on a bill that would increase the penalty for malicious abuse, torture, or killing of an animal. Susie has scars from an assault when she was an 8 week old puppy. She was burned, beaten, and left for dead. I'm so happy Susie is still with us today!

Anyway, I was just about to settle down for my morning nap when someone came in and stole my space.

Happy Easter! I hope everyone had a nice weekend. Charlotte was here and boy was she aggressive! She stole my toys AND the peanut butter jar! When she wasn't looking, I stole the jar back from her and held onto it for dear life. I refused to put it down! The good news is Mom gave me a new version of my favorite toy. On my very first day at home as a little teeny tiny pup, Mom gave me a plush giraffe. I played with it so much Mom had to throw it away. It was in pieces. I can't believe Mom got me a new one for Easter! I love it!

Happy Valentine's Day (Weekend)! I hope all of you are having a lovely weekend. Mom made a wonderful Valentine's Day cake for me. I thought I'd share the recipe!

Peanut Butter Delight:

1 cup white or whole wheat flour
1 tsp baking soda
1/4 cup peanut butter
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 cup shredded carrots
1 tsp vanilla
1/3 cup honey
1 egg

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350°F.

Mix together flour and baking soda. Add remaining ingredients and mix well. Pour into a ring mold sprayed with a nonstick spray and bake for 40 minutes.

Frost this cake with low fat cream cheese. (You can add red food coloring for Valentine's Day!) Store in refrigerator.

#19. My Birthday Party!

Last night Mom had a birthday party for me! It was SO much fun. My friend Judy came over, along with 10 of Mom's friends!

Mom made me a peanut butter carrot cake with cream cheese icing!

I ate my piece in about 2 seconds flat.

Judy, on the other hand, was skeptical.

We ran around a lot...

And played cat and mouse...

And then I got very tired.

Judy was tired too!

All in all, it was a wonderful birthday!

Today is my birthday! Woohoo! I'm 3 years old. Do you know how old that is in human years? 25. That means Mom and I are the same age!

A very special birthday wish to my sister Charlotte. I wish she could be here to celebrate with me!

Mom and I are saving my birthday celebration for this weekend. I'm getting surprise treats from Three Dog Bakery. Yippy!

Saving Grace Rescue & Adoption is a non-profit organization in Wake Forest, North Carolina. They have a huge selection of dogs right now - several purebred Labs, a miniature Dachshund, a Cocker Spaniel, a Great Dane, a Beagle, and some adorable mutts! My buddy Merritt came from them. They're a fantastic group to work with.

#16. Mylo

Mylo is one of my Richmond friends. Her mommy is in law school just like mine. Sometimes we take walks together. 'Lo is much bigger than I am, so she can walk farther. She's also a lot more hyper. Otherwise, we're pretty much the same dog.

She's a computer nerd, just like me.

She's also a doggy genius.

We both love taking naps between the couch cushions...

...and under the covers

...and back sleeping, of course!

Mylo is pretty much the coolest.

#15. Back Sleeping

I love 2 things: back sleeping and snoring loudly. Mom says neither is very ladylike, but I think both are really fun, especially when I do them together. Sometimes I wake Mom up in the middle of the night because I'm snoring loudly and kicking her with my legs. I tend to do that the most when I'm sleeping on my back. So really, the two go hand in hand.

What are you favorite things? I also love Loofa Dogs, Milkbones, and chewing on everything. Obviously, I love my sister, Charlotte, too.

PS - I think Burger loves back sleeping too!

My dear friend, Princess Judy Garland Jefferies, gave me a wonderful book for Christmas! Though I have the original "Eloise," I didn't have "Eloise at Christmastime" until today! I love Christmas and Eloise is my favorite character (obviously), so this is the perfect gift!
